Kendra McCluskey was always meant to be a cattlewoman, said Shelley Macdonald as she presented the Tehama County CattleWomen’s Association “Cowbell of the Year ” award during the association’s Nov. 2 meeting at the Red Bluff Round-Up building.
McCluskey, currently serving as the association’s president, was all smiles as she received the honor surrounded by fellow cattlewomen, including her mother, Jean Barton, and sister, Linda Borror, both of whom have received the honor in the past.
“Thank you to everyone involved in making this decision,” McCluskey said. “This is such a compliment.”
She was raised on a cow-calf operation in Red Bluff.
“She gathered cattle in Susanville in the summer months with her parents, Bill and Jean Barton, and sister, Linda Borror,” Macdonald said. “Following high school, McCluskey attended San Luis Obispo with every desire to not come back to Red Bluff.”
However, after meeting and marrying her husband, Mike McCluskey, and the couple having two daughters, Shay and Jenny, the family ended up moving back to Red Bluff and the simpler lifestyle it had to offer.
McCluskey has worked for North Valley Ag Services for 18 years, handling the inventory and chemical operations.
“On the side, she and Mike have a prune orchard that they diligently work in, making sure the trees are watered, fertilized and ripe for the picking during harvest time,” Macdonald said.
Although the couple sold their cattle operation in 2022, the cattle industry is still a big part of the McCluskey’s lives, Mike now the second vice president of the California Cattlemen’s Association and Kendra finishing her term as the TCCW’s president.
In addition to all of this, McCluskey is involved in the community serving in volunteer positions and events.
“She does an amazing job at representing the livestock industry everywhere she goes,” Macdonald added.
McCluskey will again be recognized as Cowbell of the Year during the Tehama County Farm Bureau’s Farm-City Night and January’s TCCA’s Winter Dinner.
